Clicks are down, but impressions look stable
Stable impressions with fewer clicks means aggregate CTR has fallen. It does not yet tell you why. Start with matching page/query segments, then compare position and the mix of searches before blaming a snippet change or a new search feature.
Calculate CTR from the underlying totals
Divide total clicks by total impressions for each completed comparison period. Do not average the CTR percentages of rows with different impression counts. Keep the search type and filters fixed so that the two calculations describe the same scope.
Illustrative example: 500 clicks from 10,000 impressions is 5% CTR. At 350 clicks from 10,000 impressions, CTR is 3.5%: a fall of 1.5 percentage points, or 30% relative to the original CTR. These are different ways of expressing the same change.
Check whether the audience changed
A site can gain low-CTR impressions on new queries while losing clicks on existing high-CTR searches. Its total impressions then look stable even though the underlying traffic changed. Split branded and non-branded queries, devices and countries before treating the aggregate as one behavior.
- Compare the same page and query pairs across periods.
- Check whether mobile and desktop moved differently.
- Record rows that only appear in one period rather than treating every absence as zero.
Separate position changes from presentation
Look at average position within matched segments. A similar site-wide average can hide losses on valuable searches. When the same segment has comparable impressions and position but fewer clicks, a presentation or competing-result hypothesis becomes more useful. It still needs evidence.
Inspect search appearance without guessing
Record the query, country, device and time when checking results. A visible snippet may differ from the page title you supplied. A current manual search cannot reconstruct the exact results seen by earlier users. SEO Orbiter does not collect an independent historical SERP feed.
If you suspect an AI Overview, retain dated evidence of that result layout for the affected searches. Search Console CTR alone cannot establish that this feature caused your loss. Keep competing explanations open.
Make the next change measurable
Choose a small, clearly defined set of affected pages. Record the current title, intended search purpose and proposed revision. After publishing, confirm the live response and follow comparable completed periods. Avoid “more clicks” as the only acceptance criterion: a clearer, accurate snippet matters even when demand shifts.
